Almost every guide to cleaning a diffuser tells you to empty the water tank, wash it with soapy water, and add two to five drops of oil. If you own a cold-air diffuser, all three instructions are wrong — and the last one is the kind of wrong that damages the machine. Those articles describe an ultrasonic humidifier, which is a different device that happens to share a name.
First, know which machine you own
A cold-air diffuser atomises neat fragrance oil into a dry micro-fine mist using air pressure. It holds oil, not water, and it does not heat, humidify or evaporate anything. Both the Aromax and the AroSlim work this way.
An ultrasonic diffuser vibrates a plate in a tank of water to throw off a visible damp mist, and needs the oil diluted into that water. If you follow water-diffuser advice on a cold-air unit, you will add water to a device designed to hold none.
Routine care
The three rules
Never add water. The oil is meant to be used exactly as supplied. Never dilute it with alcohol or a carrier oil — our fragrances contain neither by design, and diluting them changes how the atomiser performs as well as how the room smells. Use fragrance formulated for the device; oils sold for water diffusers have a different viscosity and are not interchangeable. Changing the fragrance
Unplug the unit before opening it. Swap bottles when the current one is nearly empty rather than letting it run dry, and if you are switching to a different scent rather than refilling the same one, expect a short overlap while traces of the previous fragrance clear.
Cleaning
Cold-air units need occasional cleaning rather than a scheduled deep clean, because there is no standing water to grow anything. Always unplug first, and follow the procedure in the manual that shipped with your device — it is model-specific, and it is the reason we do not publish a generic teardown here. If you have lost the manual, ask us and we will send another.
How long a bottle actually lasts
For daily use, our published guidance is roughly two weeks for a 30 ml bottle in an Aromax and roughly two months for a 450 ml bottle in an AroSlim. Those are starting points, not promises. Consumption is driven by the intensity setting and how many hours a day the unit runs, so a device set low in an office that runs eight hours will outlast the same device running continuously at full output.
Track your own interval for the first two bottles and you will have a figure you can order against. Our fragrance range comes in 30 ml for the Aromax and 450 ml for the AroSlim; buying the size that matches the device matters, because the bottle is part of how the unit is fed.
When something seems wrong
The scent has faded
Check the bottle level first, then the intensity setting. If both are fine, the likeliest explanation is not the machine: olfactory adaptation means the people in a space all day stop registering a constant scent within about a week. Ask someone arriving from outside before you turn the output up.
Nothing is coming out
Confirm power at the socket, then that the bottle is seated correctly and not empty. If the unit is powered and the bottle is properly fitted but nothing is diffusing, stop there and contact us rather than opening the unit.
It is too strong, or uneven
Too strong is almost always a setting rather than a fault — lower the output and give the room a day. Uneven coverage, where one end of a space smells and the other does not, is usually placement or air movement, not the device. Position the unit where air is already moving, and check that the space is genuinely within the coverage figure using our sizing guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do I add water to an Air Aroma diffuser?
No. Air Aroma diffusers use cold-air atomisation and take fragrance oil only. Adding water is not part of how they operate.
How often should I clean my diffuser?
Occasionally rather than on a fixed schedule, since there is no water reservoir. Unplug the unit first and follow the cleaning steps in your device manual, which are specific to your model.
How long does a bottle of fragrance oil last?
With daily use, about two weeks for a 30 ml bottle in an Aromax and about two months for a 450 ml bottle in an AroSlim. Intensity setting and daily run hours change this significantly.
Can I use essential oils from another brand in my diffuser?
We do not recommend it. Our fragrances are formulated for the viscosity and atomisation behaviour of our devices, and contain no alcohol or carrier oils. Oils intended for water-based diffusers behave differently in a cold-air unit.
Why does the fragrance seem weaker after a few weeks?
Usually because you have adapted to it, not because output has dropped — we explain why you stop noticing smells in your own home in detail. Ask a visitor who has just walked in. If they cannot smell it either, check the bottle level and the intensity setting before assuming a fault.
